One regret I had about moving to Egypt was that we were going to miss Calvin’s basketball season. I love watching him play and I have dreams of him being the next white Michael Jordan. Actually I don’t have dreams of him being a pro athlete, but I would love to be able to watch him play for a college team (and for the scholarship that would come with it).
He’s never had the luxury of being on a winning team, but I think he has the natural talent to be really good with the right coaching. So I was disappointed that he wouldn’t get to play this year. Then we heard about a league that was starting up — we had already missed sign ups, but Josh called and got him on a team and even ended up as one of the coaches. So now I get my Saturday basketball fix cheering for the Kings.
Calvin is #8 — a little rusty, but he’s still the best player on his team. The kids on his team are good athletes, but several of them have never played basketball before since they’re from Germany, France, and a few other countries.
Josh has a challenge ahead of him to teach them the game and to improve their skills. They lost to their first opponents (who all seemed to know how to play the game), but it wasn’t a complete blowout. I think the score was 8-12, which is worlds better than any game Calvin had last season.
It looks like Josh is yelling at them here, but he’s not. Well, he’s yelling, but not at them. They probably all need to hurry up and get back on defense or something.
