since I’m not one, but am working on it. When eating out in any country that isn’t America, you have to pay for drinking water. No tap water, only bottles. In some countries that is a blessing since the tap water would give you the gift of many microorganisms, but when the tap water is drinkable and you’re used to getting water in restaurants to keep costs down, it can be tricky. Usually water is the least expensive drink option. Other times, not so much.
Sometimes in higher end hotels when you order water they bring very expensive imported water. Last night at the pool we ordered water with dinner and got a bottle of El something or other — water bottled in the gulf region. Not expensive.
Today the kids ordered another bottle of water at the pool, but they brought a fancy glass bottle of water (plain, not sparkling) imported from Italy, already open, of course. I knew it would be expensive and when I got the bill I wasn’t surprised that it cost $7. It made the plate of nachos that was the same price seem like a bargain in comparison.
Lesson learned? Ask for local water.
