Happy Birthday!

14 years ago I went to my first ball with my 2nd Leutenant in a $20 dress from Ross. Tonight my date was a Major and I danced the night away wearing a dress from the clothes closet at church. (Not a huge sacrifice since it’s a Ralph Lauren and it came in with the tags still on it and Holly said, “You have to take this and wear it to a ball.” I didn’t argue with her).

We had a great night with friends and with each other and came home to sleeping kids and a clean house. A perfect birthday.

*** Adding our “official portrait.” We don’t usually take pictures at the ball (usually just snap one of ourselves like the one above), but I wish I had one from that first year to compare side by side.

Happy Meals

Caleb was invited to a classmate’s birthday party. He was so excited to find that the party was taking place at his favorite restaurant, “the yellow M.” We arrived to find a McDonald’s packed with 30 screaming 1st and 2nd grade little girls.

She wanted to be one of the dancing, balloon waving partiers too, but settled for an ice cream cone instead.

She’s clapping along with Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.”

Caleb has always been a ladies man. I think there were 2 or 3 other boys at the party, but he was surrounded by girls all night. He has two other birthday parties coming up that are all-girl parties, plus him. They just really seem to like him.

Calvin was the lucky beneficiary of a parent/teacher conference right before we went to the party. Josh is holding the teacher recommended flash cards. At least Calvin has the same problems with math at school as he had with me teaching him at home so I can file that one under: Not My Fault

sook shopping

For Carter’s birthday we promised him a knife. It sounds a little strange, but there’s a traditional Omani knife with a curved blade called a khanjar that he has been wanting since we arrived and we told him when he turned 10 we would take him shopping for one.

This is an example of an antique one. They have leather sheaths that are covered by silver that has been handwoven. The more intricate the design, the more expensive they are.

So we headed to the sook which is right on the harbor. It’s so beautiful there. A hot sunny day, a breeze blowing off the water . . . the kids didn’t complain too much about our hike in the heat.

We went to a bunch of different shops in the sook and Carter checked out all the different knives. A lot of them are really expensive, as in 100s of dollars, but we found some that he liked in our price range.

A happy kid with a knife. Isn’t that what birthdays are all about?

After completing the purchase (and sharing a drink with the shop owner) we stopped by my favorite silver shop to order something special for my sisters. The shop is the size of a closet so the kids played outside while I told Mohammed what I wanted him to make for me.

By this time everyone was hot and sweaty and it was time to head home. We left the jewelry section . . .

made our way through the clothing district

and found our way out through the maze of shops. Tomorrow Mohammed should be finished with my special order so I get to make another trip to the sook to pick it up.

more music

I set this to upload to YouTube the other day because I was going to post both videos at the same time, but for some reason this one took forever (over an hour) so I wandered off and forgot about it until now.

This is for those of you who wrote to tell me that you keep watching the other one over and over again.

Happy Birthday to me . . .

One of Carter’s birthday presents was the surprise of many musical cards. The best part about them is Camille is fascinated by these “books” that play music and will sit and listen and open and close them over and over again. Anything that keeps her out of the toilet is a present to me.
